nstagram has recently been on a roll when it comes to new features and updates, and it doesn’t look like it’ll be stopping any time soon.

As reported by TechCrunch, the platform is beginning to let users add popular songs to their Stories, thanks to Facebook’s recent deals with record labels.

“Now you can add a soundtrack to your story that fits any moment and helps you express how you’re feeling,” read Instagram’s blog post announcing the new feature.

It went on to describe how to access the new feature, instructing users to tap the new music icon found in the stickers section of Stories. “Tap on it to open a library of thousands of songs — you can search for a specific song, browse by mood, genre or what’s popular and tap the play button to hear a preview. When you’ve selected your song, you can fast-forward and rewind through the track to choose the exact part that fits your story.”

“When your friends are watching your story, they’ll hear the song playing as they’re viewing your photo or video. They’ll also see a sticker showing the song title and artist name.”

This move continues to compete directly with Snapchat, especially as copyright laws don’t yet allow this feature on the Snap Inc.-owned app.

Instagram also recently announced that Instagram Stories had 400 million daily users, which is 100 million more than in November of last year, while Snapchat only gained 13 million daily users in the same time period.

Instagram told TechCrunch that musicians and rights holders will be compensated for the use of their songs but did not mention exactly how those payments would work.

The new feature is currently available in six countries and will continue being rolled out as the year progresses. (sul/kes)
