The ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ trailer finds darkness in fire A still from 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix.' (Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation/File)

The just-released first X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer gives us plenty to get excited about.

There’s James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender back as Professor X and Magneto respectively and Jennifer Lawrence back as Mystique.

There’s more action for Cyclops, Beast and the rest of the young X-Men under Xavier’s care. There’s a darker, much darker story about Jean Grey’s past, and we get to see her growing into her Omega-level powers in this new trailer for the movie which is set for release in February 2019.

There’s also the chance to erase the sorry episode that was X-Men: Apocalypse. And for the X-Men film franchise to finally do justice to one of the X-Men’s most iconic and greatest comic book storylines – The Dark Phoenix Saga – especially after they botched it the first time around with X-Men: The Last Stand (we still haven’t forgiven director Brett Ratner for that disaster).

And finally, this being probably the final X-Men movie before Disney and Marvel Studios absorbs the property into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s a chance for 20th Century Fox to go out with a flaming bang.
