T

witter Indonesia, in collaboration with Into The Light community, has launched a notification service to prevent suicide and self-harm.

The notification will direct anyone to information or access to mental health resources and encourage them to reach out and get the help they need.

In a statement, Kevin Sucianto of Into the Light Indonesia said, “Self-harming and suicide are complex matters that need to be handled by partnering with a platform such as Twitter, frequented by young Indonesians. Numerous communities on Twitter can be positive sources of support.”

The feature is set in motion when users in Indonesia search for terms that are related to self-harm or suicide. The top results will always include a notification in the Indonesian language to remind users that help is available.

“If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, you are not alone. You can visit @IntoTheLightID to get help,” read the notification.

The notification will direct users to Into The Light Indonesia website, while the community’s account, @IntoTheLightID, also provides information on the prevention of self-harm.

The notification was first launched two years ago and is available in 18 countries, including Australia, Brazil, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Ireland, Spain, Singapore and the United States. Twitter plans to add more countries to the list.

Twitter also provides a special report form for people with self-harm or suicide threats, along with a special team that will monitor the threats. Information on online resources and hotline numbers will be shared and they will be urged to get help. (wng)
