Twenty-eight selected paintings from 21 masters such as Raden Saleh, Affandi, S. Sudjojono, Basoeki Abdullah and Dullah are being showcased at the National Gallery in Central Jakarta throughout August as part of celebrations for Independence Day, which falls on Aug. 17.

Paintings from the palace collections will be on display for the public for the first time during the exhibition organized by the State Palace. The historical paintings are normally housed in six palaces across the country — in Jakarta; Bogor and Cipanas in West Java; Yogyakarta; and Tampaksiring in Bali.

Curated by Mikke Susanto and Rizki A. Zaelani, the Goresan Juang Kemerdekaan [Strokes of Independent Struggles] exhibition also features a painting by Indonesia's first president Sukarno entitled "Rini" as well as 100 presidential photo collections.

Visitors can enjoy the rare opportunity at the National Gallery from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. [RIN]
