Letters: Breast-feeding is not porn

T

his article titled "Live porn aboard an economy train?" (Oct. 20) displays so many untruths and social stigmas, it's hard to know where to begin.

The suggestion that breast-feeding an infant constitutes porn is an insult to the God-given gift and responsibility He bestowed upon women, and it perpetuates the lie that women are responsible for the carnal desires of men.

Although I do not deny that some men can receive sexual titillation (no pun intended) from watching a woman breast-feed her infant, I don't think that any measures will reduce some men's ability to sexualize a situation. Some men have the ability to sexualize almost anything, from animals to inanimate objects, like shoes.

Breast-feeding advocates have fought an uphill battle to educate women that breast milk is the most superior product they can give their child. To stigmatize breast-feeding only encourages women to seek inferior methods of nourishing their babies.

The suggestion that the woman's only choices are to bare her breasts to feed her child or let the child go hungry is also incorrect. A shawl draped over the shoulder and breast will maintain modesty, as would popping the baby under a loose- fitting shirt.

Therefore, let us celebrate the true miracle that is motherhood, for only a female has the power to create and nourish life with nothing more than her own body. Let us allocate shame to where it belongs, upon the deviant minds who wish to sexualize this amazing gift.
