Let us uphold pluralism, democracy and tolerance so that Gus Dur may rest in peace.

My condolences to his family. Let us always uphold the values he believed in.

Gus Dur initiated the possibility for opening diplomatic ties with Israel, mainly due to intelligence and technological reasons.

I agree with him, but do I support Israel’s politics? Am I against Palestine’s sovereignty?

I simply support a man who saw beyond all the hatred, for the advancement of his nation, in a way he knew how.

He brought back Unity in Diversity (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika) by respecting the Chinese New Year and allowing the lion dance, etc., which were banned under Soeharto. He also tried to return the lives of ex-Gerwanis (a women’s wing of the Indonesian Communist Party) members to normal, so they could tell the truth. Rest in peace, Gus Dur. God bless you.

During New Order rule he was the one who opened his mouth loud and clear to criticize Soeharto while the others kept their mouths shut. That’s what I think of Gus Dur.

Former president Abdurrahman Wahid, although in power for a short time, left a priceless legacy for the nation. His belief in pluralism, nationalism and above all the actualization of Islam should be adapted by the Indonesian people. May he be blessed by Almighty God and may his soul rest in peace!

Gus Dur, the sight may blur, but not the mind! Gus Dur, a man of history! His mind was so open, so clear, no other politician could go before him! He was second to none!
