ANDUNG: Bandung municipality has designated Rancabayawak village in Gedebage, Bandung, as a shelter for two species of heron to protect them from extinction.
The two species of heron are cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis), locally known as kuntul kerbau, and the Javan pond heron (Ardeola speciosa) or blekok.
“We set the 600-square-meter area as the safe haven for the two heron species. No one is allowed to disturb them or destroy their homes or kill or trade them,” Bandung Mayor Dada Rosada said Friday, as quoted from kompas.com.
“Those who destroy their homes will be fined up to Rp 5 million [US$580] and will face other administrative sanctions.”
The two species were previously declared protected animals through a 1990 law on conservation of natural resources and ecosystems. Both species have reportedly been breeding in bamboo groves in Rancabayawak since 1970. Geographically, Rancabayawak is an ideal home for the birds because it is located between two rivers, the Cinambo River and Cisaranten River. — JP
