hen we talk about gliders, usually one's immediate thoughts conjure an image of a sailplane, a type of airplane that soars only using the movement of hot air, or thermal circulation. Recently, however, there is a new type of glider, one which “glides” on the sea instead of in the air.
Boeing presented the Wave Glider during the 2024 Indo Defense Expo and Forum, held on June 11-14 at the Jakarta International Expo in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.
Not only presenting its Scan Eagle unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the United States-based aerospace giant also showcased the Wave Glider unmanned surface vehicle (USV).
Designed and manufactured by Boeing’s subsidiary Liquid Robotic, Wave Glider consists of three parts. The top part is the float, a surfboard-like vessel about 3 meters long, an 8-m umbilical connects the float with a 2.2-m submerged wing rack.
Powered by solar cells and energy from waves, the Wave Rider can stay on mission 24/7 up to one year. Wave motion is converted into propulsion using a unique two-part architecture that leverages the difference in motion at the ocean surface and below. Meanwhile, the solar energy system powers sensors, communications and enables a thruster propulsion system.
Equipped with various sensors, the Wave Rider can be deployed either individually or in a fleet to enable a network of sensors for monitoring and data collection, in at least three types of missions: defense, maritime security and environmental assessment.
The defense missions include anti-submarine warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and other military applications.
