ndonesia launched a methane mitigation project on Thursday in cooperation with South Korea and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), becoming the third country in ASEAN after Malaysia and the Philippines.
Dubbed the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation (AKCMM), its implementation will be coordinated through the National Work Forum with a focus on policy strengthening, emission monitoring system, developing financially viable projects and strengthening regional dialogue.
The program also supports the 2025-2029 National Mid-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) and strengthens Indonesia’s role on green diplomacy in Southeast Asia.
Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat said organic waste management now is a priority for national climate ambition. With organic material composition reaching 64 percent of total garbage at final dump sites, Indonesian potential methane emission is estimated to reach 21 tonnes of CO2-equivalent.
“Waste management is not only about sanitation but a crucial pillar in our climate action,” he said.
“Through AKCMM, Indonesia is committed to connect practical solutions in the field with ambitious methane emission reduction target.”
Jumhur added that Indonesia appreciated supports from South Korea and ASEAN in strengthening greener and sustainable waste management system.
