AKARTA: PT Samsung Electronics Indonesia (SEIN) on Friday unveiled its new touch screen tablet, the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab, in an attempt to increase its share in the country’s fast growing tablet market.
SEIN managing director Kim Yoo-young said the country’s market for smart phones and tablets had grown significantly since last year and his firm wanted to take the opportunity to expand market share.
“The launch of the new tablet is one of our strategies to strengthen Samsung’s leadership in the Indonesian market,” he said at a press conference in Jakarta.
The company claims it currently holds a 71 percent share in the domestic market and Indonesia’s tablet sales is the biggest contributor to the firm’s global tablet sales after Korea.
The 8.6-millimeter-thick tablet, which weighs 595 grams and has a 10.1-inch touch screen, is set to be the thinnest tablet in the world. Running the Honeycomb version of the Android operating system, manufacturers say the tablet gives users a PC-like browsing experience and enables them to watch movies, view pictures and read news as well as books. — JP
