UPANG: Ayu 8, a ship loaded with heavy navy equipment, was reported disabled at Alor Island, East Nusa Tenggara, after being hit by huge waves.

The ship was travelling from Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta to Wetar Island in Maluku when it was hit on Thursday by 4-meter waves in waters off Alor, about 48 kilometers from the vessel’s destination.

When contacted over the weekend, ship captain Ferry Samha said that the ship was taking refuge in the northern area of Alor while waiting for the storm to recede. “As the waves are very high, we have decided to halt the trip,” he said.

According to Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reports, huge waves measuring between 4 and 5 meters have been pounding East Nusa Tenggara for the past week. — JP
