UNUNG KIDUL: The deer population in the Gading conservation area, Playen district, Gunung Kidul regency, Yogyakarta, has been declining due to the low number of does.
According to Yogyakarta Natural Resource Conservation Agency forest ranger Tugimayanto, the number of deer in Gading conservation area is 27, with 15 stags and 12 does. Each year, the conservation area can only add one fawn to the population.
“It is difficult to increase the deer population because we are short on does. The deer’s reproduction period is quite long,” Tugimayanto said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The agency has tried insemination, but it has not help boost the population. They opted to reduce the number of the stags, add more does and separate the sexes so they do not fight with each other.
Agency veterinarian Yuni Titasari said that raising a four-month-old deer was difficult because extreme weather resulted in illnesses that killed the fawns. — JP
