oreign Minister Sugiono met with South Korea’s top officials on Thursday to reaffirm Jakarta’s commitment to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries, while discussing efforts to enhance future cooperation ahead of the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Seoul.
Both countries agreed to advance their special strategic partnership, first established in 2017, with more details to be announced by President Prabowo Subianto when he travels to Seoul later this year.
In his first visit to the South Korean capital as a foreign minister on Thursday, Sugiono went on back-to-back high-level engagements focusing on boosting Indonesia and South Korea’s cooperation on trade and investment. He first met with South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, followed by an audience with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun.
Kim expressed his “optimism about Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045” and reaffirmed Seoul’s readiness to support its realization during the meeting, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
Expressing keenness in meeting with President Prabowo for his official state visit to Seoul, Cho followed with Sugiono on both countries’ leaders’ initiatives to elevate the Indonesia-South Korea special strategic partnership.
Both foreign ministers discussed South Korea’s continued investments in Indonesia as well as bilateral cooperation to support Indonesia’s national priority programs listed under Prabowo’s Asta Cita (eight missions), particularly on food security, energy and digital transformation.
“It is my great hope that our economic sector can grow deeper and stronger,” Sugiono said after his meeting with Cho, while underlining that future collaboration must be mutually beneficial and forward looking.
