HL Express Indonesia said on Wednesday that it had improved carbon efficiency by up to 18.3 percent from 2009 to 2010, without giving details of the amount of carbon the company had managed to reduce.
“We hope this year we can manage another 10 percent improvement and next year more than that,” senior technical advisor Ahmad Mohammad told reporters.
He said that the achievement was reached through proper map planning comprising a maximum 25 checkpoints.
“Now we are achieving 4.5 stops per hour, a reasonable increase from 3.5 stops per hour last year. Next year we hope we can achieve 6 stops per hour,” he said.
Senior business analyst for the Go Green program at DHL Express Asia Pacific, Romeo Leo Gabato, said that route optimization played an important role in increasing carbon efficiency during operations.
“Before delivering packages for our customers, we plan map points for all package destinations. Then on the road, delivery vehicles should not go back and forth or make u-turns, in the same areas,” he said.
He said that by proper planning, delivery services consumed less fuel thus reducing carbon emissions.
Besides proper map planning, Ahmad said that delivery by walking and cycling could also contribute to carbon reduction. (fem)
