T

he government is set to formulate a regulation aimed at addressing escalating legal disputes over music royalties in commercial spaces.

House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said he had asked the Law Ministry to draft regulations to deal with the copyright issue.

“The House is also monitoring the music industry, which has seen some recent developments, and we have asked the Law Ministry, which also oversees the Collective Management Agencies (LMK), to issue a practical regulation,” he said on Monday, as quoted by Kontan.

Dasco noted that the regulation would be enforced temporarily while Law No. 28/2014 on copyright is being revised.

This move is a response to the recent copyright infringement case involving PT Mitra Bali Sukses, the operator of the popular Mie Gacoan noodle franchise in Bali, which has sparked public debate. The company’s director was named a suspect after allegedly playing copyrighted music in multiple restaurants.
