irector of PT Mitra Bali Sukses, the operator of the popular Mie Gacoan noodle franchise in Bali, has been named a suspect by the Bali Police for allegedly playing copyrighted music in multiple restaurants without paying the required royalties.

Bali Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Ariasandi said that the company's director, I Gusti Ayu Sasih Ira, was named as a suspect following a report filed by the Indonesian Music Licensing Center (SELMI) in August last year.

"Ira was named a suspect because, as the director of the company that operates the restaurants, she bears full responsibility for the copyright infringement," Ariasandi said on Monday, adding that she has not been detained at this time.

SELMI is one of several Collective Management Agencies (LMK) in Indonesia responsible for managing music licensing and collecting royalties on behalf of music creators and songwriters. Currently, SELMI represents over 120,000 local and international performers, including popular singers such as Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga.

According to Ariasandi, the unpaid royalties allegedly owed by PT Mitra Bali Sukses amount to billions of rupiah as the company is accused of playing copyrighted music by artists represented by SELMI since 2022.

He added that the company was required to pay an annual fee of Rp 120,000 (US$7.36) per seat in its restaurants for the rights to play music from SELMI’s artists as mandated by the prevailing regulations.
