AKARTA: The first Indonesia Open Chess Championship is set to begin on Thursday, featuring 35 of the world’s top players from 20 countries at Le Meridien Hotel in Jakarta.
“Indonesian sports don’t organize many international competitions, so we, the Indonesian Chess Association [Percasi], have shown our commitment to developing the sport within the country,” Percasi chair Hashim Djojohadikusumo told a press conference on Wednesday.
Hashim said he hoped the championship would help Indonesian chess players improve their Elo ratings so that they could compete against world-class players.
The week-long event will feature 120 international and local players, including Grand Master Wang Yue (2716 Elo rating) of China and GM Alexey Dreev (2711) of Russia as well as Indonesian GM Susanto Megaranto and Grand Master Woman Irene Kharisma Sukandar.
Percasi deputy chief GM Utut Adianto said that the event would also be treated as preparation for national team players for the upcoming 26th South East Asian Games.
All of the chess players will compete for a total prize purse of US$55,500.
