Debunking media reports and statements made by spin doctors, European Union (EU) Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Julian Wilson says Indonesian palm oil enjoys unrestricted access to the European markets and is growing at an annual rate of over 20 percent.

“If there is a ban, how can the market be expanding at over 20 percent … If we do have a ban, it would be the most inefficient ban in history,” Julian said at a seminar on palm oil hosted by the Indonesian Agriculture Ministry, the EU and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Jakarta.

Your comments:

The honorable EU ambassador’s claim that there is no ban or boycott of palm oil by the EU is purely illusory and diversionary.

Although no official ban is in place, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United States are believed to have filed complaints to the WTO on the discriminatory EU restrictions on biofuel imports.

The fact is that the EU’s default-value calculations on palm oil make a level playing field between the EU and non-EU producers impossible. In truth, its process of default value is a trade barrier deliberately designed to keep the competition out.
