A

teenager is dead and two others injured after a tree fell on them while they were riding a motorcycle on Jl. Sumarsono in Medan, North Sumatra, during a storm early Thursday.

The storms have damaged 432 homes in Deli Serdang and Serdang Bedagai regencies, where whirlwinds, torrential rain and thunder storms have hit in the last two days.

Abdul Hasan, an 18-year-old from Medan, was killed and Deni Wijaya and Fariz, also 18, sustained fractures to their legs and necks after all three were pinned under a motorcycle after a tree fell on them.

The two survivors are undergoing intensive treatment at Pirngadi Hospital in Medan.

Witnesses say the three teenagers were riding a motorcycle when the tree fell just after midnight.

“The tree, which is around 15 meters tall, suddenly broke due to the strong winds, and collapsed on them,” said Samsudin, who helped the victims.

Samsudin said a number of residents in the area attempted to help get the victims to hospital, but one had already died.

Abdul’s mother, Aminah, said she did not expect that her second son would die after he asked permission to meet a friend.

“He asked me for permission to meet his friend, but he was gone for good,” Aminah said as she wept at their home on Jl. Istiqomah.

The number of injuries caused by the two days’ of storms in North Sumatra has been rising.

On Wednesday, a 7-year-old suffered fractures and is undergoing intensive treatment after the roof of a furniture shop caved in.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned people in the province to be alert of the extreme weather taking place this month as it has the potential to cause floods and whirlwinds.

Polonia Medan BMKG data and information head Hartanto said the storms have been extreme, with rainfall as high as 16 millimeters an hour and wind speeds of up to 30 knots. He said the extreme weather could last until the end of the month.

“May is the peak of the initial rainy season this year, so much so that torrential rains, followed by lightning and thunder, are imminent. We call on the public to be alert,” he told The Jakarta Post.

Another BMKG officer, Hendra Suwarta, said despite the arrival of the rainy season, temperatures continue to fluctuate.

According to Hendra, the unpredictable temperature was due to the sun’s currently being closer to the province, so the heat could sometimes feel scorching.
