Major auto show GIIAS ends with larger crowds but slower sales

Auto dealers have been grappling with fiercer competition, especially in the electric vehicle segment, where a wave of new models, many from Chinese manufacturers, has entered the market with aggressively low pricing.

T

he Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), dubbed the biggest auto show in the country, has closed with record crowds this year. However, industry leaders cautioned that the increased foot traffic might not translate into stronger sales.

According to an official release published on Monday, the event recorded a total of 485,569 visitors during its 11-day run from July 24 to Aug. 3 at ICE BSD, Tangerang, Banten.

That figure marks a modest 2.2 percent year-on-year (yoy) increase from the 475,084 visitors in 2024, which at the time represented the highest attendance since 2019.

The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), organizer of the event, had anticipated that the auto exhibition would draw more visitors this year with a caveat.

“In terms of transactions, I see a bit of a drop. The economic conditions are clearly more challenging this year. We’ve also seen a decline in [automotive] sales through June,” Gaikindo chairman Yohannes Nangoi said on Sunday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
