AKARTA: Actor Butet Kertarejasa performed a comedy show on Monday in Jakarta as part of an event commemorating the first year of the deforestation moratorium, part of the country’s commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
Butet played a “president” who delivered a speech and held a discussion with members of NGOs gathering to offer their criticism of the moratorium and its implementation.
He jokingly likened the show to kelompencapir, which refers to meetings conducted by former president Soeharto with farmers during the New Order.
Butet included jokes in his speech such as “the proof that my party cadres have environmental knowledge is that they always use fruit as codes … such as Malang apples, Washington apples … that means corruption vocabulary is taken from environmental discourse.”
“Malang apples” and “Washington apples” are allegedly the words used to refer to rupiah and dollars utilized amid corrupt practices.
