strong>Your comments on the decision made by Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to increase Jakarta’s 2013 minimum wage to Rp 2.2 million (US$228), a 44 percent increase from this year’s wage:

As the governor, Jokowi has to be in the middle. Even this issue still has two sides to the coin.

To satisfy everybody is to satisfy nobody. But, Jokowi has to make a decision.

So far, I agree with the governor.

Jokowi’s statesmanship and trade experience, combined with his keen public interest, made him accept what is best for his people, Rp 2.2 million as the minimum wage.

He is synchronizing it with the expected/predicted Foreign Direct Investment next year, making sure that labor conditions are intact by that time.

The trust and confidence in their governor made the people accept the set minimum wage.

Jokowi’s decision for Jakarta’s 2013 minimum wage is in line with the recommendation from Jakarta’s remuneration board a couple of weeks ago. There’s no increase or reduction.

The question is, does Jokowi really think that Rp 2.2 million is enough to achieve a good standard of proper living? Or maybe there’s another issue behind this decision.

Whatever it is, a 44 percent increase is good news for workers. Whether they think that’s enough or not, this increase is a good thing. They should be grateful.

I support the struggle of Indonesian workers for social condition improvements. But, they must understand that the more they use mass mobilization to protest, especially as fragmented and endemic as those movements are, the more inefficient their plight will be as an impact to change things.
