he Manpower Agency in Tangerang regency has demanded that Yuki Irawan, the owner of kitchen utensil factory Sinar Logam, pay his workers a total of Rp 2 billion (US$200,000) as compensation for their unpaid work.
Agency head Hery Heryanto said on Monday that Yuki had illegally employed 32 factory workers for one-and-half years at his home in East Sepatan, Tangerang regency, neglecting to pay their salaries, overtime pay and allowances.
"It's his obligation to pay the workers. The [compensation] payment, however, will not affect the charges brought against him," he said as quoted by tempo.co.
Yuki and four of his aides at the factory have been charged with enslaving 34 workers, locking them in the factory for months on end and beating any workers who tried to escape. Their trials will begin once the police have completed their case dossiers.
Separately, Yuki's lawyer, Slamet Yuwono, rejected the allegation that his client had failed to pay the workers. "Yuki paid the workers directly or to their families in their hometowns. We have the evidence," he said.
