M

usic royalty governance has come under the spotlight following a copyright infringement case involving the Mie Gacoan franchise, which has triggered broader public confusion and criticism over the enforcement and transparency of royalty regulations in Indonesia.

On Friday, the case reached a peaceful settlement, months after it was first reported by the Indonesian Music Licensing Center (SELMI) in August of last year. In July, the franchise owner was named a suspect for failing to pay music royalties.

Although the case has been resolved, it has sparked concern among business owners, musicians and the wider public.

Denis, 20, a barista at a coffee shop in Palmerah, West Jakarta, said he was aware of the case but had no idea that businesses like his workplace were required to pay royalties beyond regular subscriptions to music streaming platforms.

“The upper management hasn’t told us to stop playing songs,” he told The Jakarta Post on Friday, adding that no authorities had ever approached the café regarding royalty payments nor had the management provided any information about such obligations.

“But if later the management tells us to stop playing music, it will affect the business. Having no music at all would make the shop less appealing, since music is essential to set the ambiance,” he admitted.
