The Bogor Police are equipping their officers in the field with bulletproof vests, especially those dealing with dangerous crime.

'€œWe'€™ve done this following the recent shootings of police officers,'€ said Bogor Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Bachtiar Ujang Purnama on Friday as quoted by tempo.co.

He said equipping personnel with ballistic vests represented one of the police'€™s efforts to safeguard their officers and protect them from threats.

'€œThe Bogor Police has 1,170 personnel deployed in the Bogor Police precinct and six subprecinct police stations,'€ said Bachtiar.

He said officers working in the field, such as patrol police, police control unit (Sabara) officers, Mobile Detective Unit (Buser) officers and traffic officers, would be prioritized in terms of receiving the vests.

'€œWe'€™re still collecting data on the number of ballistic vests available in Bogor Police precinct and how many police officers need to be equipped with them,'€ said Bachtiar.

'€œIf the vests available are below our needs, we will propose additional supplies to the National Police,'€ he added.

Bachtiar said the vests used by Bogor Police precinct personnel were designed not only for bullets but also for sharp objects.

'€œTo protect the parts of the body that are prone to attack, we will provide shields,'€ he said.

Adj. First Insp. Dede Supriatna, a member of an escort patrol unit, said by wearing a ballistic vest, he was more confident and felt safer in carrying out his duties.

'€œThis vest isn'€™t heavy and doesn'€™t disturb my activities. At first, I felt awkward wearing it but now I'€™ve become accustomed to it,'€ he said. (hrl/ebf)
