he National Police and related authorities have called off the search and rescue operation that started last week following the sinking of a boat packed with asylum seekers in waters off Cianjur, West Java.
National Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Agus Rianto said on Friday they rescued 28 victims and found 42 remains of deceased victims during the operation.
'Our disaster victim investigation has completed post-mortem examinations on the remains of 36 victims. The rest will be examined today,' he said at National Police headquarters in South Jakarta.
The police have transferred 24 rescued victims to West Java Sukabumi immigration office, while the remaining victims are receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The boat, which was carrying passengers from Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq, capsized and sank on its way to Australia's Christmas Island.
Agus added the police had coordinated with related embassies and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the handling of the victims.
