he Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) willestablish an ASEAN journalism education and training center in Palembang, SouthSumatra, for journalists across ASEAN, PWI chairman Margiono said.
'We will officially announce the establishment of the institute at the National Press Day commemoration in Bengkulu,' Margiono said during a plenary meeting of the association's new executive board in Jakarta on Thursday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
The center is part of a proposal by the PWI executive board's council in charge of the Permanent Secretariat of the Confederation of ASEAN Journalists (CAJ).
The improvement of journalists' competence and professionalism through education and training programs is also in line with the PWI executive board's five-year program, explained Margiono, who is also president director of Rakyat Merdeka Group.
Previously CAJ permanent secretary Akhmad Kusaeni said the PWI would propose the center to the CAJ General Assembly in Manila, which is slated for Nov. 21-25, along with the creation of an official CAJ website and a working group to discuss the organization's status.
