ndonesian Military spokesman Rear Adm. Iskandar Sitompul said a power lossmay have caused the crash of an military helicopter carrying logistics suppliesin Malinau, North Kalimantan near the Indonesia-Malaysia border.

He said that preliminary investigations had revealed the Russian-made Mi-17 chopper lost power while in flight.

"While it was flying, it suddenly lost power, began losing height and caught fire," he said as quoted by Antara news service on Saturday.

Iskandar said the Mi-17 helicopter was only two to three years old.

Head of the Nunukan district chapter of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Oktavianto said, without further elaboration, that several soldiers were among the dead victims evacuated from the chopper.(dic)
