The Indonesia Pulp and Paper Association (APKI) has said that eco-friendly industries such as pulp and paper deserve incentives to create domestic and local jobs and provide foreign exchange.
APKI vice chairman Rusli Tan told Antara news agency on Tuesday that in addition to the palm oil industry, the pulp and paper industry currently provided the biggest foreign exchange in the agroindustry sector, therefore pulp and paper companies with big investment deserved incentives.
He, however, reminded that big investment, such for machine acquisition, would be a waste if there was no one to plant seedlings for the industrial forest (HTI) areas that would provide timber for pulp and paper industry.
Rusli added that if someone planted the HTI areas merely to sell or export the logs, illegal logging practices could increase, thus rendering the acquired machines less productive.
'It would be better if incentive is also given to someone who has their timber to sell to increase pulp and paper production with large machine capacity because the pulp and paper industry has yielded the proof,' he said.
The industry produced 5.4 million tons of paper using some 21 million tons of wood as raw materials.
Previously, National Planning Deputy Minister Lukita Dinarsyah floated an idea to reward a company with green operations.
'In the future, incentives should be directed to industries that optimize domestic resources such as the pulp and paper industry that has integrated with industrial plantations,' said Lukita.
He added that the pulp and paper industry had spent big on research and development to increase tree productivity as well as to develop forest buffers to maintain protected forests. (idb)
