The Chinese company has announced it is conducting a thorough investigation to understand the issue.
“The car was left unused in the garage for three days and suddenly emitted smoke. It is suspected to have been caused by a battery-related electrical issue,” Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat) head Syarifudin said on Tuesday, as reported by news agency Antara.
The electric car was seen emitting thick black smoke, and witnesses reported hearing an “explosion”, prompting the owner to report the incident to the local fire department, which deployed six vehicles with 30 personnel to the scene.
BYD Indonesia spokesman Luther Panjaitan told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday that the company was conducting a thorough investigation to identify the issue and determine the cause.
“We are sorry for what happened to our customer and apologize for the inconvenience,” Luther said.
