Central Java has delayed disbursing social assistance funds (bansos) in the run up to the presidential election.
The delay is a response to a recent statement by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) that bansos funds are prime targets of embezzlement.
Central Java's acting provincial secretary Sri Puryono said that in fact a small percentage of the bansos had already been disbursed.
'However, a larger share of the funds have not been disbursed because they are still being observed and examined,' Puryono said in Semarang on Monday.
The delay, he added, would stay in effect until the budget change in August, or until after the presidential election.
Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo said the reason for the delay in bansos funds and grant disbursement also stemmed from recommendations made by several regents and mayors.
'Several regents have expressed the desire that the bansos funds proposed by community groups be withdrawn and be re-purposed to finance roadwork in the regions,' said Ganjar.
