Actress Meriam Bellina says she added new traits to the well-known character of Emak (mother) in the new movie version of comedic TV series Bajaj Bajuri, which was very popular in the mid-2000s.

'€œI tried to imbue the character with my signature style, mixing the Betawi [Jakarta native] accent with the Sundanese accent,'€ Meriam said as quoted by kompas.com in Jakarta.

The 49-year-old said that she did not want the audience to see the same Emak on the big screen. Emak was played by veteran actress Nani Widjaja in the TV series.

'€œI hope the film will be entertaining and provide a good laugh for people,'€ Meriam said. The fi lm, which also stars Ricky Harun, Eriska Rein, Nova Eliza, Eno Lerian and Soleh Solihun, will be released in cinemas nationwide on July 24.

The Bajaj Bajuri series was applauded for its successful approach to comedy and presentation of Jakarta'€™s working class and social interaction.
