esidents living on the slopes of Mount Slamet in Banyumas, Central Java, have been carrying out their daily activities as usual although the volcano's alert status was raised to Level 3 five days ago.
'We are used to the frequent rumbles and roars of Mt. Slamet, so we are not too worried,' local religious leader K. Hayun, 45, from Karangtengah village, Baturraden district, Banyumas, said on Monday.
He said that Mt. Slamet's volcanic activity usually signalled a big change in the country, such as the transition in Indonesia's leadership that is currently taking place. Hayun's village is located at a safe distance of 10 kilometers from Mt. Slamet.
The status of Mt. Slamet, which stands 3,436 meters above sea level, was raised to 'alert' by the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) following intensified volcanic activity.
With the rise in status, the PVMBG issued a new recommendation that no activities, including hiking, should be carried out within a 4-km radius from the peak of Mt. Slamet.
