Batu Aji Police chief Comr. Zainal Arifin said the blast, which also injured several workers, occurred when the workers were cleaning the ship using sandblasts and wielding a pipe in a basement cabin.
'The wielding caused heat in the cabin, which was believed to have triggered the explosion of a liquefied petroleum gas [LPG] canister. A forensics team has been called to the scene to investigate,' Zainal told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.
The dead victims were identified as Ermanto, project manager Topgrid, blaster painter Poniri, and Bradus Pata. The missing worker was identified as Suhadi, who is also a blaster painter.
Eighteen injured workers were still being treated at Charis Medika Hospital in Batam.
