Germany snatches gold at parachuting event

T

he German team dominated the gold medal tally at the 38th World Military Parachuting Championship (WMPC) that was held in Surakarta, Central Java from Sept. 17 to 27.

The team won the first podium position for the men'€™s individual style, men'€™s individual accuracy, men'€™s team accuracy and men'€™s combination categories.

The German delegation'€™s chief of mission Maj. Rafael Schornet said he was proud of the achievement, adding that previously, he had been worried about wind conditions at one of the parachuting locations, Manahan Stadium.

He said that at that time, the wind was so strong that it seemed as though it would cause difficulties for participants in landing accurately on their targets.

'€œWhen we open the parachute, we want no wind. But it was very windy up there; that'€™s not good for the competition,'€ he said over the weekend.

The US'€™ Golden Knights won the women'€™s team formation skydiving category. US women'€™s team leader Karen Morrison said the team'€™s hard work was worth it. '€œI'€™m happy for them,'€ she said.

Meanwhile, Indonesian female participant Ni Putu Irma Purnama Dewi won first place in the junior women'€™s individual category.

The event was attended by 406 participants from 42 countries. Indonesian Military commander Gen. Moeldoko led the closing ceremony, which was marked by a sunset jump showcase at Prambanan temple in Yogyakarta on Friday. He was accompanied by official Representative of the Conseil International Du Sport Militaire (CISM) Col. Rinnete Hulme.
