esidents in 35 regencies and cities across Central Java on Friday pulled nails out of trees in public areas as part of a drive to save the environment.
The movement was part of Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo's directive asking the community to pull out the nails for the sake of the environment.
In the provincial capital of Semarang, Mayor Hendrar Prihadi and his aides pulled out nails from trees on Friday morning along the streets in the city center, most of which have posters and banners attached.
The condition of many trees is alarming, with many punctured with large nails used to attach the banners and posters.
Most of the posters and banners on the trees were because of political campaigning during this year's legislative and presidential elections.
