ow-cost carrier AirAsia has officially launched its inexpensive express courier service in Indonesia, RedBox, to increase its ancillary income.
AirAsia Indonesia commercial director Andy Adrian Febryanto said on Monday that RedBox offered an affordable 'door to door' courier and parcel delivery service ' in addition to the carrier's cargo, which serves a 'port to port' service.
'The firm's ancillary income adds around 20 percent to the firm's revenue and we are looking to boost it further with this new service,' Andi said in a press conference.
Jointly marketed with Singapore-based R Box Asia Pte Ltd., the service was also claimed to be 50 percent cheaper and more efficient than other delivery services of its kind because 60 percent of the cost of delivery services was usually derived from airfares.
In addition to lower costs, the RedBox service would be much faster, said R Box Asia CEO Randy Ong, adding that the courier service was committed to delivering the goods on time with tracking and tracing features available for customers.
RedBox will tap into the group's route network across more than 88 destinations and 22 countries. It currently operates in six Asian countries and 31 major cities across Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Nepal, Ong said.
According to him, plans were under way for AirAsia to expand its courier services in nine other countries and territories next year, including Australia, China, Macau, Hong Kong, Japan and India.
With AirAsia's network and flight frequencies, the service would provide exclusive reach to various destinations not connected by other airlines, he said.
'We already have several hubs for export in Indonesia, namely Medan [North Sumatra], Jakarta and Surabaya [East Java]. But Indonesia is a very vibrant country, that's why we also see the opportunity not only for outbound but also inbound markets,' Ong said.
The carrier is also planning to expand the RedBox operation hub in Bandung, West Java, and Denpasar, Bali, in the near future.
'RedBox will help develop local, small businesses with export and import services that can reach several destinations that are not yet catered for by other airlines,' said AirAsia Indonesia other revenue and business head Rifai Taberi.
'This service will hopefully help small and medium enterprises that have been growing rapidly in Indonesia and we aim to reduce their operational costs by introducing this service,' he continued.
Customers can log on to redbox.airasia.com to request the service and payments to be made via Mastercard, Visa or Paypal.
