House likely to confirm Badrodin nomination

fter more than three months, the House of Representatives is expected to hold a confirmation hearing on the nomination of Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti as new National Police chief, during which lawmakers are expected to endorse President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s pick.

Badrodin, the current acting National Police chief, is expected to be examined by lawmakers from the House'€™s Commission III overseeing law and human rights next week, after President Jokowi gives his explanation to the House about Badrodin'€™s nomination, which is scheduled for Monday.

Although no date has been set for the confirmation hearing, Commission III lawmakers signalled that they would proceed with the process when lawmakers wished Badrodin good luck toward the end of a meeting on Thursday.

The meeting, which was held to discuss the latest domestic security situation, steered clear of any topics regarding his nomination, but Badrodin nonetheless, with a smile on his face, responded to lawmakers by saying: '€œThank you and wish me luck'€.

After the meeting, Badrodin told reporters he had prepared himself for the confirmation hearing, including drawing up a number of strategies to enhance the police'€™s performance under his leadership.

'€œI too will aim to improve solidity within the National Police,'€ he said.

President Jokowi nominated Badrodin following a month-long standoff involving the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the National Police, which ended with Jokowi dropping the candidacy of his first pick, Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan, the former adjutant to former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, who chairs the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

Budi was named a suspect by the KPK one day before he was nominated by Jokowi.

The KPK accused Budi of receiving gratuities while he was serving as the head of the career development bureau at the National Police headquarters from 2004 to 2006.

Jokowi has not given a formal explanation to the House regarding his decision to drop Budi and has only asked the House to proceed with Badrodin'€™s nomination.

'€œ[Jokowi] hasn'€™t explained to us why he revoked his decision to nominate Pak Budi Gunawan and instead went with Pak Badrodin'€™s nomination,'€ said House Deputy Speaker Agus Hermanto of the Democratic Party faction.

'€œWe must first hear Pak Jokowi'€™s detailed explanation about the issue. Commission III will then schedule a confirmation hearing soon after,'€ the Democratic Party politician added.

The House leadership is expected to announce a schedule for Badrodin'€™s confirmation hearing in a plenary session slated for Tuesday next week, during which opposition could emerge.

The Democratic Party is the only political faction that has openly expressed its approval of Badrodin'€™s nomination. The other 10 factions are still waiting for Jokowi'€™s presentation on Monday.

House Deputy Speaker Fadli Zon claimed that Badrodin'€™s confirmation hearing would be a smooth process and that if approved, Badrodin would be the next National Police chief within 20 days.

'€œApproval or rejection, we will have the result within 20 days,'€ Fadli said.
