The Japanese ambassador has said Tokyo will support the east-west line of the Jakarta MRT, but has no immediate plans to provide funding for its extension into neighboring Banten province.
okyo will support construction of the east-west line of the Jakarta MRT but has no immediate plans to be involved in extending the mass rapid transit system further into Greater Jakarta, according to its top diplomat in Jakarta.
Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Yasushi Masaki said Tokyo’s current priority was completing the northward extension of the existing line and to start construction on the east-west corridor, followed by funding support for urban development around new MRT stations.
“We are now constructing the extension of the northern line and have also agreed to start the east-west line. If we move forward smoothly, we can think about expanding, but that would come after further discussions,” Masaki said at a press briefing on Thursday.

The Jakarta MRT has become one of the most important public transportation networks in the city since the first phase of construction on the north-south line was launched in 2019, with funding from the Japanese government.
The rail-based system’s existing line runs from Lebak Bulus Station in South Jakarta to Bundaran HI Station in Central Jakarta, and is currently being extended northward to Kota Station in West Jakarta. The second phase of construction involves developing the east-west line.
Tokyo 's involvement in the Jakarta MRT project so far has focused on infrastructure and integrated urban planning, with an aim to replicate the transit-oriented development (TOD) model around train hubs in Japan.
