manufacturer of jengkol (dogfruit) crackers in West Cengkareng in West Jakarta is suspected of having used a dangerous borax chemical as a preservative in his products, an official said on Wednesday.
West Cengkareng subdistrict head Imbang Santoso said he found some plastic bags allegedly filled with borax intended as a preservative at a factory site belonging to 'H' when officials did an inspection on some home industries in the subdistrict on Wednesday.
'We inspected data records and also checked reports from some residents about the use of borax. We found suspicious chemicals that are not safe for consumption,' he said as quoted by tempo.co.
Imbang said he took some samples, including textile-color chemicals and raw ingredients, to the district office and the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) for further investigation.
The cracker-maker denied using the dangerous chemicals, saying that the business had been operating for eight years. (rbk)(++++)
