he capital of Papua, Jayapura, is exploring the possibility of forging cooperation in the field of animal husbandry and agriculture with Vanimo city in Papua New Guinea.
"We've met twice to discuss the cooperation. As two neighboring cities, it's important for us to agree on mutual cooperation," Jayapura Mayor Benhur Tommy Mano said on Saturday.
Under the cooperation agreement, Vanimo city will send its citizens to Indonesia to study animal husbandry and farming. "They will be accommodated in Muara Tami district for six months. After returning from Jayapura, they are expected to apply what they've learned in their country," Benhur said.
A memorandum of understanding on the cooperation will soon be signed. "We hope it can be realized as soon as possible," he said.
Vanimo and Jayapura are located next to each other. Many Vanimo residents frequently buy their basic necessities at Skouw Wutung Market, about 500 meters from the border between Indonesia and PNG.
Security in the area is frequently disrupted by attacks by unidentified armed groups, who after conducting an attack in Indonesian territory flee to Vanimo. (hhr)
