ank Indonesia (BI) Regional Office V for Central Java and Yogyakarta has prepared Rp 15 trillion (US$1.12 billion) to meet increased demand for cash during Ramadhan in Central Java.
'BI's central branches across Central Java, namely BI representative offices in Central Java, Surakarta, Purwokerto and Tegal, have prepared cash totaling around Rp 15 trillion,' said BI Regional Office V's deputy head Marlison Hakim in Semarang on Wednesday.
Learning from the experience of previous years, he said that during Ramadhan, people had always drawn cash in a larger amounts to meet spending needs ahead of Idul Fitri.
'It is expected that cash withdrawal during Ramadhan this year will see an increase from the same period last year, which totaled Rp 11.7 trillion,' said Marlison.
As in previous years, he said, BI would provide a service for Muslims who wanted small change for handing out to their relatives, friends and neighbors during the Idul Fitri celebration. The bank will make available unlimited amounts of small change.
Marlison said BI would arrange a schedule for its small change service to ensure that it reached everyone.
He said in the first two weeks of Ramadhan, the small change service would be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays while in the last two weeks of the fasting month, small change counters would be available from Monday to Thursday, from July 6 to 15.
The counters would be opened from 8 a.m local time and closed when either the number of people queuing up had reached 800, or regardless at 12 midday, he added.
'We offer small change services not only to the public but also to government offices, Indonesian Military and National Police institutions, and state-owned enterprises. Small change services for institutions can be conducted collectively where they have to submit small change request letters to BI, which will provide that service on Wednesdays,' said Marlison.
He said people could also access the small change service in seven state and private banks in Semarang, namely BRI, BTN, BCA, BPD Jateng, BNI, Mandiri and Panin, without having to pay any fees.
'BI will also provide mobile cash services in markets and office areas,' he said. (ebf)(++++)
