Indonesia has won one gold and two bronze medals at the 12th International Geography Olympiad in Moscow, Russia.
Andito Jeremia Adhyatma from SMA 8 state high school in Tebet, South Jakarta, won a gold medal in the competition that was attended by 41 participating countries last week, Antara news agency reported on Monday.
Meanwhile, Andito's friends, Asri Hadiyanti Giastuti from SMA 1 state high school in Bogor and Melinda Gularso from the Christian High School SMAK 7 Penabur in Jakarta won bronze medals.
The Indonesian team was mentored and supervised by Samsul Bachri from the Bandung Institute of Technology and Junun Sartohadi from Gajah Mada University (UGM).
The 2015 International Geography Olympiad was initiated by the International Geography Union (IGU) and held by the Olympiad Task Force under the Russian Education and Science Ministry in collaboration with the Russian Geographical Society, Tver State University and Lomonosov Moscow State University.
Samsul said that Indonesia was set to host an international geography competition next year, which would be organized by the Education and Culture Minister in collaboration with various universities in Indonesia. (nov/ika)(++++)
