Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has said that Kampung Pulo in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta remains prone to flooding because the city administration has not been able to relocate all people living along the Ciliwung River banks.
On account of heavy rains in the upper area of Bogor, West Java, on Sunday, the Ciliwung River overflowed into remaining residential areas, including community unit (RW) 03, which is located in the border area of a flood-mitigation project in Kampung Pulo.
The governor said that his administration could not do its job to mitigate flooding as long as there was a lack of support from all stakeholders.
'The flood-mitigation project has not been completed yet. I am sure that [Kampung Pulo] will still experience flooding. But I hope that it will recede soon,' said Ahok, as reported by tribunnews.com on Wednesday.
More than 500 households were relocated in August from Kampung Pulo to nearby low-cost apartments in Jatinegara, East Jakarta to allow the government to begin its flood-mitigation project.
He expressed hope that all parties would show support for the efforts of the city administration to expand the Ciliwung River for the common interests of Jakartans. 'If you do not show support sincerely, flooding will continue to occur,' he added. (bbn)(+)
