P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo hosted a sixth limited meeting to solve the problems slowing Light Rail Transit (LRT) development on Wednesday.

The government expects that LRT construction in Jakarta, Bandung and Palembang will be complete in time for the 2018 Asian Games. Yet, five limited meetings failed to alleviate disagreements and thus, the projects have yet to show significant progress.

"We want to change the transportation. But once again, a decision regarding route must be made. It must be able to integrate various transportation modes," Jokowi said during a limited meeting held at the Presidential Office in Jakarta.

It is important, he continued, that the LRT developed in Jakarta connects to the airport, mass-rapid transit/ MRT, bus stations, and the port. "I am sure this is already part of the plan," he went on.

Connectivity between areas and regions is important to drive an increasingly efficient economy. Lower logistics and transportation costs would increase Indonesia’s competitiveness, Jokowi said.

The government is pushing for modernization in transportation infrastructure; constructing a larger seaport, longer airport runways, and modernizing bus, ship and train facilities. "All for the comfort and safety of the passengers," Jokowi said. (ags)
