aritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said the development of 17 islets in Jakarta Bay shall wait for a green light from National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) because the city administration could not continue the development of the man-made islets by itself.
“It’s too simplistic to think the project should be managed only by Jakarta. How can [the administration] say that Jakarta was not a part of national strategic area? Jakarta is the capital of the state. The development of 17 islets will create [more than] 5,000 hectares of land. Therefore, the comprehensive Environmental Impact Analysis [Amdal] is needed,” Susi said at a discussion held at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in South Jakarta on Tuesday.
The city administration had required an Amdal for each islet and not the entire project.
Susi said the reclamation projects in Jakarta would impact West Java and Banten. She said the Navy did not have a place to park their submarines because the sand on Tunda Island, Banten, had been dredged to develop the islets on the Jakarta northern coast.
Contrary to the Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan’s statement that gave a nod to the continuation of reclamation projects in Jakarta Bay, Susi believes the projects will continue after Bappenas issues a recommendation of the project by the end of the month. (evi)
