A

session at the World Culture Forum 2016 in Nusa Dua on Wednesday engaged participants in insightful discussions on numerous initiatives to bring culture closer to the people and thereby impact its development.

The session, "Culture in the New Digital World", presented Google Cultural Institute head of operations Luisella Mazza, Europeana Foundation executive director Jill Cousins; MBC Plus Media Korea president and CEO Ahn Kwang-Han and ruangguru.com founder and CEO Belva Devara.

The participants were invited to delve into the cultural ramifications of the digital world. The internet has given rise to entirely new cultural practices, especially in the notion of sharing and open access. The new culture of sharing and openness was identified as a sign of increasing public participation, which in turn would contribute to sustainable development.

"Making our cultural heritage work in the digital world is a moral and economic obligation. Morally, sharing helps us connect our culture to understand each other. Economically, it creates innovation in a whole new industry. It contributes to our sustainability as a human race," said Jill Cousins.

"Culture should not become a museum of the past, but it needs to contribute to democratized access to knowledge and to our future. And digital availability, particularly if it's done in an open way, allows just that," she said. (evi)
