akarta gubernatorial candidate pair Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno will hold a major campaign event at Lapangan Banteng in Central Jakarta on Sunday, which they expect will draw more than 20,000 supporters.

Member of the Anies-Sandiaga campaign team Rini Wulandari said Thursday that all high-profile figures from the candidate pair’s two supporting political parties – the Gerindra Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) – were scheduled to attend the event to urge the audience to vote for the pair on February 15.

"[Gerindra Party patron] Prabowo Subianto will be there. We are very excited because this is the main event of our campaign," Rini said.

Besides speeches from political party leaders, various performances will be held to showcase the diversity of the capital.

Prabowo and senior PKS officials, including party president Sohibul Iman, have begun to attend events on the Anies-Sandiaga campaign trail. Experts have said that despite having lost the 2014 presidential election, Prabowo remains a popular figure and his support could boost Anies’ electability.

A recent poll by Poltracking Indonesia showed that Anies-Sandiaga was the frontrunner, followed by Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama – Djarot Saiful Hidayat and Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono – Sylviana Murni. It was the positive polling result for the Anies-Sandiaga ticket after being ranked at the bottom of various surveys conducted over the past months. (trw)
