resident Prabowo Subianto spoke with newly inaugurated South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, with both leaders agreeing to bolster cooperation between the two countries.
During the phone call on Monday, Lee told Prabowo of his intention to visit Indonesia and expressed his appreciation for his Indonesian counterpart’s congratulatory message after his recent electoral victory, according to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in a statement issued on Wednesday.
“Both leaders also exchanged views on global developments, and agreed to continue and strengthen the partnership between the two countries,” Teddy said, noting that bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea has continued to grow steadily.
The leaders discussed how to further advance the special strategic partnership established in 2017, with a focus on “trade and investment, future industries driven by digital and green transitions, as well as the defense and arms industry”, South Korean presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said on Monday as quoted by the Yonhap news agency.
Lee also invited Prabowo to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, set to take place later this year in South Korea’s Gyeongju.
A left-leaning candidate from the Democratic Party, Lee won the South Korean 2025 presidential election in early June after securing 49.4 percent of the vote, beating the 41.2 percent of conservative candidate Kim Moon-soo.
The snap election came just three years after the 2022 race, in which Lee narrowly lost to Yoon Suk-yeol by around 200,000 votes. The South Korean National Assembly impeached Yoon last December after a failed martial law declaration.
