he Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) said on Thursday that thousands of ballot papers for the Feb. 15 gubernatorial election were found to be damaged during sorting conducted in five municipalities and Thousand Islands regency.
“So far we found around 21,000 damaged ballots, or 0.3 percent of the total 7.2 million ballots we received,” KPU Jakarta commissioner Betty Epsilon Idroos said at the commission’s office in Paseban, Senen, Central Jakarta.
She said KPU offices had reported finding various damage on ballot papers, from ink stains to papers with asymmetric shapes.
Betty added that for the next few days, KPU offices in the five municipalities and Thousand Islands regency would continue to sort through the ballot papers to ensure that all ballots delivered to polling stations were free of damage.
She said the commission would immediately contact printing company PT Adi Perkasa in Makassar, South Sulawesi, to request that they reprint and deliver new ballot papers.
The KPU Jakarta expected to receive the replacements within a week, Betty said.
The commission aims to distribute election materials to all subdistricts no later than Feb. 8 and to all polling stations on Feb. 14, she added. (ebf)
